That spirit of hope and determination is part of what makes America strong. At the same time, we must take our responsibility seriously to maintain secure borders and a fair, orderly immigration system. We can be both a nation that protects its borders and a nation that lives up to its values by offering a clear and comprehensive path to citizenship for those who are contributing to our communities.

For too long, immigration has been treated as a political talking point rather than a challenge that requires thoughtful, bipartisan solutions. We must finally come together to pass comprehensive immigration reform that provides clarity, stability, and fairness. Enforcement efforts should focus on individuals who pose genuine threats to public safety (dangerous criminals and traffickers) not on families who have built their lives here and contribute every day to our neighborhoods, workplaces, and local economies.

At the same time, our immigration system must operate with humanity and respect for the rule of law. Individuals going through the immigration process deserve safe and humane conditions while their cases are reviewed. We should restore the efficient issuance of visas for those who qualify so that legal immigration pathways function as intended. And we must rethink enforcement practices so that immigration authorities are focused on serious threats rather than creating fear within communities. By combining strong borders with fairness, compassion, and practical reform, we can build an immigration system that reflects both our security needs and our highest American values.
